Great post, and I can entirely relate to the writing as “hobby”. It’s funny, I just wrote an entry to a contest this week saying a similar thing – how my mom encouraged my writing as she had even heard of DOCTORS who were writers “on the side”. The problem there? On the side!

Ah yes! Lots of parallels with my experience. Lots of praise when I was young but that was quickly followed by a huge push toward a stable way to make a living.

Finally, many, many, years later I was able to return to writing and I continue to be glad about that.

Great piece, and so true. I suppose some of us bring a bit more initial hubris, but eventually fall back on similar degrees of dismay or discouragement. It’s often said, if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. Go for it.

Thanks for sharing Julie. I think other aspiring writers will see that they can do what makes them happy and it can be a serious pursuit.

Depression is serious and I’m glad you mentioned it in your piece. I’ve suffered from depression for most of my life and there are many ways I’ve discovered to cope with it, none better than writing. Whenever I write or say that life is better with writing, I mean it. My life is ten times better when I write.

That ‘evil genius’ thing is so overrated – we all get over it at some point! LOL.

PJ, it’s scary to me how many writers go through similar dismissals of their talent. I’m all for back-up plans, but it drives me crazy that so many parents don’t support their kids.

Which means that yes, Paul, I’m not discouraging my boy. I’m just not completely encouraging of the “evil” part

Sorry I made you cry, Dani and Misty. I honestly would have liked to start this in a happier place, but the road has been a bumpy one. Writing just the happier bits would have been a lie, so I had to start with some of the formative stuff. On a high note, at least I ripped off that particular bandage quickly. Next post starts in the 21st century
