New Series Spotlight: Bloodlands

We’re starting a new feature here at The Book Pushers called the New Series Spotlight! If you love series books as much as we do, you’ll know that there are tons of them out there, and we don’t always find out about them right when they come out. So we are trying to help you find some new series reads. Each month we will feature a new up and coming series that we think you should know about!

Today, we are looking at a very exciting new series by Christine Cody called Bloodlands. We got with Christine to get some more info for you!

New Series Description: What is the series about?

If I were to short-pitch this, I’d say that Bloodlands is a paranormal Shane meets Mad Max.  The longer pitch is this: Initially, we meet Gabriel, a drifter who is looking for his lover—a woman who mysteriously deserted him and ran off to the New Badlands, which is a desolate place where people have gone to hide from the terrible events of this new world.  He finds trouble out there, as well as a bunch of survivalist types who take him in when he’s wounded.  Like most Western movie gunslingers, he has lost his soul—but this is literal for Gabriel because he’s a vampire.  When a monster hunter appears in the New Badlands, Gabriel and his protectors need to decide whether or not it’s worth “outing” him to save all of them, and Gabriel even wonders if giving himself up is his path to regaining what he remembers of his humanity.

I loved writing the second and third books, too, because I got to expand on this world.  Some of the characters venture to the “hubs,” or cities.  They’re in search of cures for monsters, but, as you might expect, they find something utterly different.  Big trouble ensues, as well as the introduction of many other strange creatures.

My favorite part of writing this series was how I was able to twist some tropes from old Western movies into something paranormal.  We’ve got the “soulless” drifter trope with the vampire, but you also meet everyone from “the fallen woman,” “the mysterious sick lady,” “the crusty sheriff,” and “the disillusioned yet determined pioneers.”

How did the idea come about: A little info about how the author came up with the idea.

Bloodlands was mainly inspired by old cowboy movies.  I was watching quite a few of them and thought, “What if Shane was a vampire?”

Blood Rules (book 2) is a “road trip” story at its core.  In Blood We Trust (book 3) has some Bonnie and Clyde in it—but all these stories are postapocalyptic supernatural Westerns.

Series plan: How many books will there be, how is it going to be formatted (new characters each book, follow same h/h) etc.

Three books will be released in what they call a “bam-bam-bam” pattern, one month after the other.  Bloodlands came out July 26.  Blood Rules follows on its heels on August 30 and then we have In Blood We Trust on September 27.  We’ll see if there are any more!  This series follows the same characters with the focus being on the hero and heroine, although I spotlight a few important secondary characters, too.

Any additional information you want the readers to know!

I’m just so happy that people who love to read allow me to write.  Thank you so, so much for that!
