I’ve enjoyed Covington’s contemporary books in the past, so when I saw she wrote a paranormal, I figured I’d give it a try. While I’m not a huge fan of vampires, I did like the little twists that Covington added to her story.

Deacon has been a vampire for a long time now, but the one who hasn’t been able to leave his mind is Cici. When she shows up asking for his help, Deacon is powerless to say no to her. As he does some digging, he realizes that Cici has made a powerful enemy, and one that will stop at nothing to rid the world of vampires, starting with Cici and Deacon.

Cici has made a name and business for herself with matching Others and humans through her dating service. But there are many people who don’t want to see humans and Other mixing. Because of her business, Cici has become not only a target but is put under a spell, and she finds her vampire life might soon be over.

One of the things I enjoyed about this story was the little differences that Covington threw in. I love reading books about paranormal creatures who are “out and proud” with the general population, because I think it lends to some really interesting storylines. I loved the idea of vampires working in secret with the military throughout history, as well as the idea of fanatical groups who are trying to eradicate the Other population.

While I enjoyed the romance between Cici and Deacon, I did feel as if there was a little something missing with their romance. I wanted their history to be explored a bit more, especially since they had so much of it. While most of the storyline features the problems of their past that had to do with Cici’s turning and the death of her family, they had also been together on and off for over two hundred years, and yet it seemed as if that time together was a bit glossed over. I would have liked to see those moments explored a bit more, since they had all that time flitting in and out of each other’s lives.

I am a huge shifter girl at heart, so while I loved getting to see Deacon’s best friend and the Other police detective as shifter characters, I was jonesing for more from them. While I get that their storylines weren’t crucial to the overall plot, I would have liked to see some of the Other characters playing a more prominent role in the book overall.

All in all, I thought Covington had a great first paranormal book with this one. The worldbuilding was interesting and a little unique to what is currently available today. I wish that the story would have been a bit longer, because I would have liked to see certain aspects of the world explained a bit further. I do hope that Covington continues to write in and expand this world.
I give Sex and the Single Vamp a B

  1. Very nice review, thank you. I like that this book has 2 vampires, and not 1 vampire and 1 human as is more custom. And they are both older vampires, which is good as well. I have added this one to my wishlist.
