How I got this book: eARC from author

I’d do anything to keep my mother alive.

Anything, including ask Ian Kerr for help. I don’t know much about him, except that he has more money than some small countries. And he’s willing to spend it on me. Just one catch: there’s a string attached, and not just the one I feel pulling me into his arms and his bed. There’s also the plan for revenge he wants my help with.

Every time he says my name, it makes my body shiver and my heart stutter. I know he’s going to wreck me, know there won’t be anything left of me but lust and sensation by the time he’s done with me, but even though I can see the heartbreak coming towards me like a train, ready to crash into me, I can’t get out of the way. I want what he makes me feel. Want what he’s offering.

This may have started out as something to save my mother, but now…now it’s about what he makes me feel. I’m in danger of losing everything that’s important. Worse? Ian’s whispered words and hot caresses are making me believe that’s okay.
*Blurb from Goodreads*

I’m a big fan of Frederick, so when I saw her newest series, I was eager to read it.

Tiny is desperate to keep her mother in good spirits as she has to battle cancer once again. The only problem is that Tiny doesn’t have money to keep her mom happy, or the ability to make money to provide for her needs. Until she meets Ian.

Ian needs someone to help pull of a revenge plan he’s been working on for years. When he first meets Tiny, the last thing he wants to do is use her in his plot. He wants her in his bed, but her need for money is more important than her own desires, so Ian slowly brings her into his life, and his plot, and his bed. But as their relationship heats up and the rest of Tiny’s life implodes, she might not have what it takes to protect herself.

I need to preface this review by saying this book has a VERY different feel than Frederick’s Woodlands series books. It’s darker and sexier, and for me, there was something missing. I love the Woodlands books, and this book just didn’t live up to the expectation I had in my mind for it.

One thing I did enjoy was that Frederick took the heat up quite a few notches in this book. Ian and Tiny have a very physical relationship, and they don’t shy away from the dirty talk and even dirtier actions. I thought their chemistry was great, and although I didn’t always understand the attraction from Ian’s perspective, I did enjoy the way they explored and enjoyed each other. It was very sexy, very hot, and very dirty!

But, like I said, I didn’t always understand the connection between these two. When a book is told from first person with just one character, I sometimes struggle understanding the motivations of other characters. With this book, Ian was pretty much a complete mystery to me. I really needed more from him to really get what his motivations were, why he was making the decisions he made, and what was driving him toward Tiny. I just struggled with his character in general.

Another aspect that might not bother other readers, but left a sour taste in my mouth was the fact that this book is just the start of Ian and Tiny’s story. When it comes to my romance books, I really don’t like the story to be dragged out across multiple books. In a paranormal or urban fantasy setting it doesn’t bother me as much, but with straight romance, I really don’t like the new trend of trilogies about one couple’s journey.

All in all, I really wanted to fall in love with Frederick’s new series, but it just wasn’t for me. I was disappointed with the lack of connection to the hero, and would have liked to have more from him. While Frederick’s writing is great, and the sex has been ramped up, I felt as if the magic of Frederick’s other novels was missing.
I give Losing Control a C-
