How I got this book: E-Arc from Publisher

23340561“Heavy rains and strong winds slammed an uprooted tree through Steve Crowell’s roof, leaving a gaping hole to match the one in his heart. After his ex left him for a younger man, Steve’s not sure he’s ready to handle another disaster. His best friend highly recommended the contractor, but the man’s already late, and when he shows up with his music thumping, Steve isn’t impressed—until Riley steps out of his pickup truck. Personable, gorgeous Riley talks a mile a minute, which Steve finds both ridiculously endearing and terrifying. Piecing together a heart isn’t as easy as fixing a roof, but Riley might just be the right man for the job.”

It’s not that I didn’t like this novella because I did enjoy it. There was an easy free-wheeling feel to the dialogue and the story moved along smoothly. The characters were interesting and liked getting to know them as they, in turn, got to know each other.I especially liked Riley who was a chatter-mouthed cutie and Steve, who was quieter and older was enamoured with him as well. The little bit of history we got of Steve and his ex-boyfriend Jay was intriguing. The same with Riley and the troubles with his ex. Unfortunately, it just skirted the edges of something that I would have loved. I think the length had something to do with it, not because it felt choppy but more because a lot of the things I wanted to read about
ended up being skipped over and told to the reader after the fact. I found that a bit frustrating because I wanted to read it and not be told it.

I almost wish this had had a bouncing POV because I would have enjoyed being in Riley’s head. This was definitely a sweet read but I wish that it had been fleshed out more. It’s my first book from this author and I like their style so I’ll be checking out what they have coming next.

I’m giving “Fixing the Hole” a C.
