The Court of Venus

September 2026 Must Haves

BP Note: The Arts lost two incredible members recently. They touched countless lives across various mediums and what they gave of themselves has fed hopes, dreams, and souls. Thank you creators! Your impact is much greater than it appears.

We are approaching the turning of the seasons once more. Here scorching hot days have turned into muggy confused weather days. Maybe if I go water my tiny yard it will stop flirting and just commit to raining or if I forget my umbrella at home the skies are bound to open up. Pumpkins, gourds, thick skinned squash, apples, and Italian plums are starting to appear. Some mornings call for a cozy flannel or fleece and the birds are starting to gather. School buses are running their routes full of students as commuters adjust around the school rhythm and remember how much earlier they need to start their treks to arrive on time.

We have a small but mighty list for you this month. Each with their own twist for the present day, the past, or the future. Let us know what you are looking forward to this month or even as the seasons shift. As always take care of yourself and let people know they matter.
Happy reading!

The Scattered Register of the Namekeeper (Enchanted Post Chronicles #4)The Scattered Register of the Namekeeper (Enchanted Post Chronicles #4) by Paula Lester – 10 Sep (Self)

In Mosshollow, every letter knows the name of its recipient. Lately, some of them have started to forget.

Phoenix Firebolt has walked every route in her mother’s old ledger and made the word Hearthkeeper her own at last. She thought she knew the whole of the work. Then the names begin to slip.

A letter turns up with its address bright and its recipient worn to a ghost. A neighbor gropes for a name he has said ten thousand times and finds nothing but weather to blame. One at a time, quietly, the village is losing the smallest and most necessary thing it owns: the way its people find their way back to one another.

The trouble leads to a keeper Mosshollow forgot it ever had and a flame that has guttered low. And the timing is merciless because Sorrel and Pim are to be married, and a wedding is the one day no village can hold without names. The invitations. The vows. The register that makes it true.

To save the wedding, Phoenix has to save the keeper. To save the keeper, she has to recover what a whole village let itself forget before the names she holds most dear go dark for good.

Science Fiction

MassifMassif by Garth Nix – 8 Sep (Harper Voyager)

Caught me a mountain
Rode it to the stars

It’s business as usual for Ship Leader Parnell Shi-Sawahla and the crew of the corvette Sassafras. Ride a Massif to a new system, fight the enemy, repeat. For more than two hundred years humans have been hitching rides on these sentient, starfaring mountain ranges, colonizing planets and exporting an on and off again war between Earth and Mars.

But the big questions are always there, behind every battle, every new colony, every new star system discovery.

Why do the Massifs carry humans to the stars?

Why do they help us export our wars?

What’s in it for the Massifs?

Ship crews aren’t supposed to ask these questions, they aren’t supposed to think about these questions, and they definitely aren’t supposed to go deep and talk to Massif avatars. But now Parnell and his tight-knit crew must try to find the answers, to save not only themselves but the future of humanity.

Kit McCafferty is an upstanding citizen of the magical city of Coldstream. Mostly.

She’s a good neighbour. She has a fabulous partner, an occasionally tidy home, and only a moderately alarming number of cats. Her days as a professional assassin with Eagle Enforcers and Liquidators are behind her. Or so she thinks.

When Kit volunteers to assist local law enforcement with crowd control, she comes face-to-face with her former life. Someone is trying to destroy EEL — the discreet but deadly firm of assassins she once called home — and they’re not concerned about collateral damage. They’re willing to raze Coldstream to the ground to finish the job.

Whoever is targeting EEL knows its inner workings and its secrets. Kit’s old friends and colleagues, as well as the citizens of Coldstream, are at risk. To stop blood from spilling onto the city’s glittering streets and shadowed alleyways, Kit must decide who she is now – a heroic citizen determined to protect her city or a stone cold killer.

Walking away might not be an option.
