The dedication

When I received my first contract, one of the things that excited me most was the thought of writing a dedication to the people I love.

Writing is hard and I had a lot of support from friends, family and a bunch of writing buddies who never cease to amaze me with their generosity.

So I knew my first dedication would be epic. I even had goals:

  1. I wanted to make the people I mentioned cry, (yes, I’m a horrible, horrible person). I wanted them to be so overwhelmed with emotion that they shed a tear.
  2. I wanted to bring a bit of happiness to those who helped me. As I mentioned above, I’ve been blessed with heaps of support and needed to make those people realise how much I loved them for their encouragement and dedication to my work.
  3. And most of all, I wanted my husband to read it and look back at me with admiration and love.

When Sneaking a Peek was released (my first solo release, with my first dedication), I patiently waited to see who would notice the dedication first.

I scored big time on my first goal. Both my sister-in-law and mum cried tears of joy. Goal number two was a big hit as well. But number three?

My husband was sitting on the couch opposite me when he began reading SaP. This was his part of the dedication:

To my own spunky fireman—you are my heart, my soul, my everything. Your faith is unwavering, your love unrelenting, and I am so glad you are my happily ever after.

I sat in silence, pretending to be focused on my laptop, all the while eyeing him eagerly. He grinned, shook his head, then looked up at me. I waited, holding my breath for his remark and he comes out with, “You know the guys at work are going to give me so much sh*t for this.”

All those weeks of eagerly anticipating his happiness…*poof* vanished.

So I thought I’d give a little payback when the dedication for Concealed Desire came around. I contemplated writing something like “To my husband, who doesn’t have a romantic bone in his body, but loves to wear my frilly knickers.” Unfortunately, that would be a lie, so although it would be fun I decided against it. What I ended up with was something entirely truthful, and yet it still had the embarrassing quality that I was aiming for.

…But you will have to read Concealed Desire to see what it is 😉

Book Blurb

A love that breaks all the rules…

Since her first day at work, Beth Graison has been in love with Dean Sutherland—the “Son” in Sutherland & Son. Although he’s an unrepentant player, there’s an unmistakable connection between them, and she knows he feels it too. But she’s not about to risk her career for any man, especially one with an office right down the hall whom she works with every day.

Dean Sutherland doesn’t do love, but he does do women. And he hasn’t felt more than sexual attraction for any woman until Beth. Entirely feminine, smart, and with a natural beauty beyond compare, she makes him think about all kinds of uncomfortable things—like a future and happiness—things he knows from experience are pure fiction.

When his father, the “Sutherland” in Sutherland & Son, propositions Beth to be more than just an employee, Dean can’t keep her at arm’s length any longer. But he doesn’t expect the scorching kiss they share, or the idea that forms when he holds her in his arms. Can he stop his father’s manipulating game by making the first move on Beth? Or will his reputation as a womanizer make him just one more Sutherland she wants to ignore?

  1. Great post!! Husbands just don’t get it, do they? My hubby may not be romantic all the time, but the once in awhile he is, it is overwhelming, cry a river moment. Can’t wait to read your book.

  2. @TrishJ:

My hubby used to be extremely romantic. Love letters, flowers every week. It got to a point where he was getting a huge credit card bill and didn’t seem to care. But things change. And you are right Trish, men don’t get it, but that’s ok as long as they still have their perfect moments every now and again. 🙂

I hope you enjoy Concealed Desire.

  3. There is a saying that the best books are the ones that tug at the heart (emotion). Great interview.

  4. Great post Eden. I wonder exactly what the guys said to your husband about the dedication, which I thought was very nice 🙂
Congrats on the new release and thanks for the giveaway.

  5. @June M.:

They teased him quick a bit. Luckily he’s the boss of his shift at the fire station and takes as good as he gets.

Apparently, with the Concealed Desire one of the guys took a photo of the dedication and read it out loud to everyone at work. So I think I’ve given enough payback now. 🙂

  6. Thank you all for your kind words. Concealed Desire was a lot of fun to write but also means a lot to me being my first finished story.

I hope you all enjoy it.

  7. I’d love to read this book! My husband is better at doing romantic moments than I am, so I have nothing to complain about

I can’t wait to read the book, and Thanks so much for the chance to win this giveaway! 🙂
