Torn between dangerous desires…

Framed for a series of brutal murders, rebel-turned-CEO Zack Goldman must go to ground. When he discovers that sexy boutique owner Sloane Swift has a shocking gift—terrifying visions that connect her to his mentor’s missing daughter—he can’t believe her refusal to help him. Nor can he believe he’s actually falling for the frustrating woman.

Their chemistry will either find its perfect equation…

Helping an accused killer ranks low on Sloane’s to-do list, no matter how hot the attraction burns between them. But putting to rest her overwhelming guilt over the missing girl’s fate proves more difficult than she ever imagined…that is, until her heart and conscience begin to align.

…or detonate everything in its path.

As the real killer locks in on Sloane, Zack will stop at nothing to keep her safe. And as they earn each other’s trust—with danger in hot pursuit—they may just lose their hearts in the process…

*Blurb taken from Goodreads*

I have not read a romantic suspense in a while but the blurb for COME HELL OR HIGH DESIRE had me at hello.  Zack Goldsmith is on a quest to find his missing pregnant friend, Ann, who has disappeared and may have gotten involved with a man who has threatened her. He didn’t count on the fact that his world would be rocked on its axis when he encounters Ann’s co-worker, Sloane, who has her own secrets which she is afraid that could destroy the life she has built up around her. Nonetheless, Sloane holds the key to help find Ann and to help Zack who finds himself as the main suspect in a series of murders.

Even though I liked the main premise of the book, I did have problems getting into the story in the beginning. I wished that there was more time setting up the characters and backstory, because I found the tone and pace a bit abrupt. However, the main leads, Sloane and Zack, were engaging and kept me interested in the story. I really liked Zack’s character who was sweet and loyal which went against my preconceptions of what he would be like, because I envisioned this alpha type in a suit, and I found that very refreshing. I also loved how the romance developed with Sloane throughout the book. The sexual and emotional tension was sexy and their intimate moments together were a highlight in the book.

I also found Sloane’s psychometric gift, which allows her to touch objects and sense past and future events, to be vivid. In one scene, when she senses a murder, it was creepy and eerie and helped to set up the tone of the book which focuses very much on the murders which Zack was framed for. Yet I found some of the plot twists and pacing was not that believable for me and there was a few too many convenient coincidences within the story. I really felt for one character who was affected deeply because I felt it was just not realistic they would get slammed like that by fate and luck.

Overall, while I wasn’t overly keen on the main plot and mystery because of the way it ended, I did like the main characters and romance. I also liked the psychic storyline which integrated pretty well with the plot and that was one of the main strong points of the book for me. The romance was also another factor which I enjoyed and it was another reason why I was engaged with the story and the romance.

I give Come Hell or High Desire a C-
